A viewpoint held by many folks is that only male trees are planted in our cities, landscapes, and along our streets. Terms like 'botanical sexism' are often used to describe this, and many attribute their allergies to the overplanting of male trees in the urban environment. However, this is not true. In the eastern US, the majority of species that are planted in urban environments are monoecious, cosexual, or polygamous, and have male and female flowers in some form on each individual tree. According to Dr. Kim Coder, only 20% of species in the eastern US are dioecious, meaning individual trees have either male or female flowers, but not both. Globally, Dr. Coder claims that only 5% of trees are dioecious. #trees #maletrees #botany #tree #arborist #forester #urbanforestry #urban #philadelphia #allergies #philly #philadelphia #streettrees
