Replying to @Kat influencers receive warning letters from the Federal Trade Commission. There’s a good chance this story is going to get shared far and wide, just like it did a few months back. Many people HATE the idea that big corporations secretly use underhand tactics to persuade your decision making, and many people HATE sugar, sweeteners and sodas specifically, so this is a real hot topic for a lot of people. But, it’s important to understand something. This FTC warning letter *does not* mean that these 12 people all failed to disclose they were being paid. Many (most?) of them *did* disclose it, but the FTC feels that disclosures should be more apparent. For example, if someone is doing a sponsored post, putting something like ‘hashtag ad’ at the end of it is not sufficient as many people might not read that far down. Some people might not read the caption at all and the FTC is saying influencers need to be more transparent about paid partnerships. Putting this specific instance to one side, there is an important lesson here for everyone. MANY people receive financial incentives to promote certain foods, products and supplements on social media. And it is very important that influencers do appropriately disclose when they are being paid for. Because if you see someone promoting a product, you deserve to know if they are doing it solely because they like a product, or maybe just because they are being paid. I think we can all agree on that, right?
