The ankle joint is the bane of many athletes and hopefully this video explains why. When excessive inversion of the foot occurs, the 3 lateral ligaments of the ankle are put under strain. The Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL), Posterior Talofibular Ligament (PTFL), and the Calcaneofibular Ligament compose the support system of the lateral ankle. The ATFL reaches anteriorly from fibula to talus and is commonly ruptured. The PTFL also connects to the talus posteriorly. The calcaneofibular ligament stretches down from the fibula to the calcaneus. Eversion, the opposite of inversion, is less likely to produce a sprain because of the dense medial ligament known as the deltoid ligament.
