This is the only physical evidence remaining from the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. William Clark engraved his signature here in 1806, and you’ll find it at Pompeys Pillar National Monument, a true hidden gem just east of Billings, Montana. It was here that Clark arrived in July of 1806 during the 2+ year expedition designed to explore the new Louisiana Purchase. You can take a short hike up a series of stairs and boardwalks to see this signature and various other engravings made over the years by fur trappers, military expeditions, and early settlers. From the top, you’ll probably agree with Clark’s journal description that there is “a most extensive view in every direction.” Though you won’t see the bison, elk, and wolves that he saw, you might spot some other, less threatening wildlife. An on-site visitor center and outdoor exhibits interpret the expedition’s travels through the Yellowstone River valley. Overall, it’s worth the stop for the history buff, and it’s one of the few places along the entire Lewis and Clark Trail where you can be assured of standing in the footsteps of William Clark and other members of the Expedition. . . . . . #lewisandclark #lewisandclarktrail #montana #billings #billingsmontana #billingsmontanaphotographer #history #historicalsites #montanalife #pioneerhistory #travelblogger #travelphotography #historicalplaces #travelgram
