Morning, noon, and night, Mwinzi’s always full of beans - fuelled by his love of food! Rescued on the brink of death in September 2022 - a victim of that year’s brutal drought which took a toll on all species - Mwinzi was brought to our Kaluku neonate unit. Given how gaunt and poorly he was, and being so young - estimated at 5 months - we braced ourselves for tough times to help save this little calf. We need not have been worried, fuelled by milk and greens, Mwinzi barrelled into Kaluku life. His bright personality and easy manner making him a firm favourite with all the other orphans - it’s just important that he has his greens and branches at bedtime… if they aren’t there then everyone in Kaluku and further afield will hear about it! We caught up with critically endangered black rhino Chamboi this evening, out for an evening stroll with his Keepers. His leisurely bumbling evolved into a trot when his Keepers picked up the pace, encouraging their little charge to expend a little more energy before bedtime. Chamboi was rescued as an orphan on 6th September 2023, after rangers discovered him all alone. Just days old, he was prone to predator attack. Our SWT helicopter was brought in to try and locate his mother, but after several hours of searching yielded no results the Kenya Wildlife Services greenlit a rescue. He was brought to our Kaluku Unit, whereby he remains in the Tsavo ecosystem from where he originates. Just as with the elephant orphans in their care, our Keepers are with Chamboi 24/7. Providing him the nurturing and nutritional environment he needs to heal and grow. Chamboi is a real character, who loves his blanket and naps. World Elephant Day kisses from our newest baby in blue — Taroha! We have been waiting quite some time to share this special elephant’s tale. Taroha’s rescue in March, when KWS rangers spotted a lone, year-old, elephant calf close to Lake Jipe in Tsavo West National Park. He was still milk-dependent and far too young to be without his mother. At first, we were cautiously optimistic about Taroha. But then, he took a worrying dip. His condition crashed and his ears curled in, which is always a telltale sign of poor health. Still we forged on, taking the victories and setbacks in equal measure. It was during this time that a very special friendship was cemented in Taroha’s life. Because of his fragile state, he was partnered up with tiny Mokogodo, the youngest orphan elephant at the Nursery. Clad in their matching blue blankets, they became an unlikely couple and an inseparable pair. Where Mokogodo is feisty and definitive, Taroha is calm and easy-going. She is the ringleader, he is happy to be led. We have no doubt that this friendship helped pull Taroha through his darkest times. What better time to introduce Taroha than #WorldElephantDay, a day dedicated to securing a future for our planet’s largest animals! This is just the beginning of Taroha’s story — one that, all well, will continue to unfold for many, many decades to come.
