Former President Donald Trump remains the undisputed favorite for the 2024 GOP nomination, despite facing several indictments in recent months. However, while his lead among primary voters remains unaffected by his legal woes, new evidence suggests the related expenses are causing significant financial strain on his political operation. Recent campaign finance reports submitted to the Federal Election Commission and reviewed by NBC showed that Trump's Save America PAC spent more than $20 million on legal fees. Those fees constituted a significant share of the PAC's spending, amounting to ⅔ of its expenditures from January to June, according to NBC. The costs have been piling up amid many investigations, including the DOJ’s probe into the Jan 6 Capitol riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, as well as a separate examination of the alleged mishandling of classified documents, which has already resulted in federal charges. Trump has also been criminally charged by the Manhattan DA for alleged hush money payments made during his 2016 presidential campaign. The extensive legal spending has significantly impacted the PAC's finances, which started the year with more than $18 million but ended June with less than $4 million in cash on hand. The Save America PAC and Trump's presidential campaign are separate entities, but the legal expenses show the toll the investigations are taking on both the financial and political aspects of his orbit. #trump #politics #voters #gop #news
