It's rare for indigenous people to be the leads in anything, much less in productions as big as the new Avatar: The Last Airbender series by @avatarnetflix so this is understandably a massive win for the community to see so many indigenous actors who are a part of it. However it's tough for me to ignore the obvious controversy surrounding the allegations made around Ian's identity. Ian is saying he is Cherokee. Many people are saying he isn't. Netflix and Ian's agents aren't chiming in on the conversation. So who's to know 🤷 But, that being said, it's definitely brought up a good point. The entertainment industry holds such power in shaping narratives and perception about indigenous people. Whenever the opportunity to tell our stories arise it should be done with grace, due diligence, and deep respect. That way we avoid the dangerous and harmful portrayal of our cultures that we experience all the time in media. Whether Ian is indigenous or not, there's a conversation to be had about accountability to communities you claim to represent.
