The pair were invited on to debate the arresting of protesters during #KingCharles’ #coronation. A total of 64 arrests were made by the #MetPolice on the day of the coronation, including six from the UK’s leading anti-monarchy group #Republic. #TheMet has since expressed its “regret” and cancelled bail for all six. A policy announced on Sunday (13 August) as part of the government’s Levelling Up scheme revealed requirements for all new builds to separate male and female toilets, which it argues is to “protect single sex spaces”. “The change comes amid dignity and privacy concerns from women and elderly people who feel they are being unfairly disadvantaged as publicly accessible toilets are increasingly being converted into gender-neutral facilities,” the statement alleges. A study into the rate of regret for #topsurgery has confirmed that it improves life for the overwhelming majority. Research published on Wednesday (9 August) involved 235 patients who had undergone a #genderaffirming #mastectomy – top surgery – over 30 years. It tracked their levels of satisfaction across the two-year period following their surgeries. The study from the #UniversityofMichigan – published in the journal #JAMA #Surgery – found that the median satisfaction rate among those surveyed was five out of a five. Regret was 0 out of 100, meaning not a single patient involved in the study regretted their choice to have the surgery. None of the respondents reported undergoing reversal procedures. The research involved only a single medical centre, so for the findings to be “generalisable”, future research will need to involve people in a number of places, the study authors said. They noted that a recent review of research suggested the regret rate for #transfeminine and #transmasculine surgeries was one per cent. Invited commentary on the survey commended the research, with the findings said to “support other studies with shorter follow-up” and demonstrate the “stability of surgical results”. The annual Rainbow Map ranking has named Malta as the best nation for #LGBTQ+ rights in Europe for the eighth year in a row, while the UK’s score continues to fall.  ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map and Index has ranked European countries on the basis of their “legal and policy situation” for LGBTQ+ people each year since 2009. The index ranks countries from zero to 100 per cent, with zero representing gross violations of human rights, and 100 representing full equality. Countries are marked in seven categories: #equality and non-discrimination, family, hate crime and hate speech, legal gender recognition, intersex bodily integrity, civil society space, and #asylum. The 2023 list published on Thursday (11 May) placed #Malta top, with a score of 89 per cent.  Rising in the ranks to fourth place was #Spain (74 per cent), which ILGA-Europe said was due to the country’s ground-breaking introduction of a #selfID law for #trans people. Until 2015, the UK consistently achieved the number-one spot in the rankings, but since then has slipped down the list. It was down in 10th in 2021 before falling to 14th in 2021. This year, the country dropped further still and now sits in 17th place. The worst countries for LGBTQ+ people in Europe are #Azerbaijan (two per cent), #Turkey (four per cent), and #Armenia (eight per cent). Those three countries have retained the bottom three places for the past three years. Previous reasons for the UK’s slide have been the government’s immigration reforms, including its plan to deport some asylum seekers to #Rwanda, which ILGA-Europe claimed “would expose LGBTQ+ asylum seekers to unprecedented risk of violence”. #UN independent expert #VictorMadrigalBorloz shared his assessment of the UK’s #LGBTQ+ rights on Thursday (11 May) following a 10-day visit. He said that abusive rhetoric from politicians, the media, and social commentators has resulted in increased hate speech against marginalised groups in the UK. “I am deeply concerned about the increased bias-motivated incidents of harassment, threats, and violence against #LGBT people including a rampant surge in hate crimes in the UK,” he said. “All of this is attributed – by a wide range of stakeholders – to the toxic nature of the public debate surrounding sexual orientation and #genderidentity.” He also noted concerns around waiting times for gender-affirming care in #theNHS and at the lack of movement in the government’s promise to ban so-called conversion therapy. He called its continued U-turns on the issue “perplexing”. “The vicissitudes of this and other necessary public policies appear to be connected to political discourse concerning gender-diverse persons and #refugees and #asylumseekers, two areas in which recent state actions are cause for concern,” he added On asylum, he said that the government’s “current and envisaged asylum policies… could effectually amount to an asylum ban, contrary to international refugee law standards”. While Madrigal-Borloz lauded the UK or implementing “radical change” and a “robust framework of domestic and international legal protections” in recent decades, his view on the future was cooler. If you’ve been anywhere near the internet in the past 24 hours, you’ll know what we’re talking about. Aside from performing in Dubai earlier this year, a move that can only be described as a transgression from her usual modus operandi, Beyoncé’s first performance of the tour has reaffirmed her affinity with queer people of every creed, with its set list and staging, but the world’s most-famous mononym did not limit the promotion of self-love and acceptance to the stage. According the Twitter account Renaissance Updates: “Beyoncé’s team is making all of the bathrooms #GenderNeutral on the #RenaissanceWorldTour.” The move, which promotes inclusion and allyship, has been met with a wave of support from fan base, the Beyhive, and beyond. On Friday (9 June), the #NationalHealthService released a report stating that it would only allow under-18s to receive #pubertyblockers in exceptional circumstances or under a study looking into their effects. “Outside of a research setting, puberty suppressing hormones should not be routinely commissioned for children and adolescents,” a statement read. Puberty blockers are sometimes administered to #trans under-18s as a way to pause puberty development to help combat #genderdysphoria. Under the new rules, which the #NHS described as an “interim policy”, the medication would only be accessible after further research outlines the impact they have on #transgender adolescents. The NHS website describes the effects of puberty blockers as “physically reversible”, but notes that “it is not known what the psychological effects may be.” The website also claims that many cases of “gender variant behaviour” disappear after children hit puberty, despite a UK survey published in April finding that just 0.47 per cent of gender identity clinic patients feeling regret after #transitioning. The NHS announced in 2022 that it would close the #Tavistock Centre’s #Gender and Identity Development Service (#GIDS) in favour of four regional centres to help minimise growing waiting times, following recommendations made in an interim report by #DrHilaryCass. Plans to close the UK’s only service for #transyouth were delayed to March 2024 after the NHS said the “complexity” of the project required “revisions to the timetable”. The non-inquiry session looked at the current #RSHE curriculum in schools, what parents and young people want in this subject area and how the curriculum is being delivered, as well as this the committee also looked at how the government’s review of RSHE is being carried out and stakeholders’ “confidence” in it.  A private session began at 2pm which was followed by two public segments at 2.30pm and 3.30pm.  During the first session, the committee heard from a panel of three witnesses representing #BiologyMatters at #PolicyExchange, #SafeSchoolsAllianceUK and the #FamilyEducationTrust; organisations which have expressed anti-trans and anti-drag views.  #Labour MP #KateOsborne, who headed up the committee, questioned if reviewing RSHE lessons and how gender issues are taught would “repeat the failings of #Section28”.  “My campaigning life started around the 80s, pushing back on Section 28 and the damage that it done and to me it feels like we’re just going backwards a little bit. So do you think there’s a risk there?,” the Jarrow MP asked the panel. The government faced major backlash when plans were first announced to make UK schools out #trans children to their parents, as part of a “blanket ban” on social transitioning in school. This would have involved restricting school children from identifying with an alternative name and pronouns or wearing the uniform of the opposite sex unless they had parental permission. But, after an examination into the draft guidance by attorney-general for #England and #Wales, #VictoriaPrentis, it was determined that an outright ban on social transitioning in schools would be unlawful under the #EqualityAct, #TheTimes reports. One source told the publication that there were fears this ban on social transitioning could put the government on “the wrong side of history”, much like a modern equivalent to #Section28, #MargaretThatcher’s 1988 ban on the promotion of #homosexuality that was repealed in 2003. The #Russian president signed the law on Monday (24 July), which officially bans “medical interventions aimed at changing the s3x of a person”, including #genderaffirmingsurgery and prescribing #hormonetherapy, The #Moscow Times reported. The new law also outlaws changing #gendermarkers on official documents such as passports, which had been legal in #Russia since 1997. Passed by both houses of the #Russianparliament earlier this month, the law also bans trans people from adopting a child and annuls marriages in which one of the partners is #trans. #Tennessee’s oppressive #AdultEntertainmentAct (AEA) – the first #antidrag bill to pass through a US state legislature and be signed into law – was meant to be put into effect in April, which would have prevented #dragperformances from being allowed anywhere a minor might see them. The group argued drag is an art form and that the AEA was unconstitutional under the #FirstAmendment.  In the new 70-page ruling on Friday (2 June), Parker said the court concluded Tennessee’s drag ban is “both unconstitutionally vague and substantially over-broad”. “The AEA’s ‘harmful to minors’ standard applies to minors of all ages, so it fails to provide fair notice of what is prohibited, and it encourages discriminatory enforcement,” the judge wrote.  “The AEA is substantially over-broad because it applies to public property or ‘anywhere’ a minor could be present.” Parker added the anti-drag law is a “content- and viewpoint-based restriction on speech”. The list of threats to kids in the US is long. Young #Americans face epidemic levels of gûn violence, health inequality, mental health issues, abuse, neglect, poverty and not to mention the long-term health consequences of being exposed to environmental toxins from industrialisation and climate change.  For a party that claims to care so much about kids, #Republicans have been quiet on tackling such issues. Instead, they’re laser focused on attacking drag performers amid a wider pushback on LGBTQ+ rights, and #alaskathunder5000 isn’t here for it.  “I never thought it could come to this, especially since we’re in a country that has a lot bigger problems than drag,” she tells PinkNews.  “And if you ask the average American what they’re concerned about with the road this country is going down, I don’t even think drag makes the top 10, henny.  “I mean it just doesn’t. It’s like healthcare is a disaster. People don’t make enough money to have basic necessities. #Climatechange is really bad, like pollution.  “All of these things – there’s a litany of issues that are really actually concerns for this country. So this is, it’s frustrating, it’s offensive and it’s dumb.” Yet, here we are. In the US, the 2023 legislative session opened with a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ bills, and right-wing legislators from #Texas to #Arizona have focused on cracking down on drag instead of actually protecting their constituents.  There’s been over 160 anti-LGBTQ+ protests and threats targeting drag events since early 2022, according to #GLAAD. False rhetoric was deployed against performers in midterm campaign ads, and an #Oklahoma donut shop was firebombed after the business hosted a drag event.  At such a time of such hostility towards the drag community, Alaska still wants to ‘shine a light’ on the beauty of the art form. #Prochoice campaigners in #Ohio are pushing for an amendment in November that would enshrine #abortionrights in the state constitution. Issue 1 was a proposed constitutional amendment hat would have made this more difficult, requiring any citizen-initiated amendment to obtain a supermajority (60 per cent) of votes to proceed. The proposal that was rejected in a special election on Tuesday (8 August), by a margin of 57 per cent to 43 per cent. In a statement on Tuesday, president #JoeBiden said: “Today, Ohio voters rejected an effort by Republican lawmakers and special interests to change the state’s constitutional amendment process. “This measure was a blatant attempt to weaken voters’ voices and further erode the freedom of women to make their own health-care decisions.
