#WestYorkshirePolice have been accused of “manhandling” an autistic girl because she said an officer looked like her grandmother, who is a #lesbian. The 16-year-old was arrested for a homophobic public order offence, police confirmed to #PinkNews, as footage of the incident sparked widespread outrange on social media. The girl’s mother, #LisaRozycki, accused the force of being “bullies in uniform” in a TikTok video. A policy announced on Sunday (13 August) as part of the government’s Levelling Up scheme revealed requirements for all new builds to separate male and female toilets, which it argues is to “protect single sex spaces”. “The change comes amid dignity and privacy concerns from women and elderly people who feel they are being unfairly disadvantaged as publicly accessible toilets are increasingly being converted into gender-neutral facilities,” the statement alleges. A study into the rate of regret for #topsurgery has confirmed that it improves life for the overwhelming majority. Research published on Wednesday (9 August) involved 235 patients who had undergone a #genderaffirming #mastectomy – top surgery – over 30 years. It tracked their levels of satisfaction across the two-year period following their surgeries. The study from the #UniversityofMichigan – published in the journal #JAMA #Surgery – found that the median satisfaction rate among those surveyed was five out of a five. Regret was 0 out of 100, meaning not a single patient involved in the study regretted their choice to have the surgery. None of the respondents reported undergoing reversal procedures. The research involved only a single medical centre, so for the findings to be “generalisable”, future research will need to involve people in a number of places, the study authors said. They noted that a recent review of research suggested the regret rate for #transfeminine and #transmasculine surgeries was one per cent. Invited commentary on the survey commended the research, with the findings said to “support other studies with shorter follow-up” and demonstrate the “stability of surgical results”. A freedom of information (FOI) request has revealed the shocking waiting times faced by trans people seeking medically necessary #genderaffirmingcare with the #NHS. Information uncovered by the request in 2022 was highlighted by trans broadcaster #IndiaWilloughby on social media on Thursday (3 August) tweet. The November 2022 thread alleged that the FOI request suggested a 35-year waiting time for trans people seeking gender-affirming care. A freedom of information request is an appeal for information made by a member of the public into data held by a public authority. The FOI request found that, as of 31 October 2022, there were 1865 people on the waiting list for a first appointment at the Porterbrook Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) in Sheffield. It also found that, on average, the maximum wait time for patients as of October 2022 was 220 weeks for a first appointment, with about 0.2 patients seen per day on average. Between January and October 2022, 33 patients had been seen for a first initial appointment. Activist Amber, who sent the FOI request, calculated that, if all the information was accurate, it would take up to 35 years for a new applicant to be seen by Porterbrook GIC. “The NHS has trans healthcare in name only, any [care] they are providing is just a statistical anomaly, a rounding error,” Amber wrote. The television presenter sensationally parted ways entirely with #ITV on Friday (26 May) after confessing publicly that he had an affair with a much-younger man who worked on #ThisMorning. Reports quickly began circulating that #PhillipSchofield had met the person in question – who has not come forward publicly – when he gave a talk at a theatre school. #Schofield’s lawyers confirmed to the #EveningStandard that his to-be-colleague was just 15 when the pair met – but reiterated their relationship began years later, after he started working at ITV. Schofield confirmed in a previous statement that after meeting the young person, he was “asked to help him to get into television”. It is understood that Schofield arranged for him to have an interview at ITV. He later joined the broadcaster as a production assistant when he turned 18. The admission comes just days after Schofield confirmed through his lawyers that he had an affair with a younger male colleague while still married to #StephanieLowe. In his statement, Schofield said he was “deeply sorry” for having lied about the nature of his relationship with his younger colleague, and that he had resigned from ITV. He described the relationship as “unwise, but not illegal”. “Contrary to speculation, whilst I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him to get into television, it was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship. That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It is now over,” Schofield said. The annual Rainbow Map ranking has named Malta as the best nation for #LGBTQ+ rights in Europe for the eighth year in a row, while the UK’s score continues to fall.  ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map and Index has ranked European countries on the basis of their “legal and policy situation” for LGBTQ+ people each year since 2009. The index ranks countries from zero to 100 per cent, with zero representing gross violations of human rights, and 100 representing full equality. Countries are marked in seven categories: #equality and non-discrimination, family, hate crime and hate speech, legal gender recognition, intersex bodily integrity, civil society space, and #asylum. The 2023 list published on Thursday (11 May) placed #Malta top, with a score of 89 per cent.  Rising in the ranks to fourth place was #Spain (74 per cent), which ILGA-Europe said was due to the country’s ground-breaking introduction of a #selfID law for #trans people. Until 2015, the UK consistently achieved the number-one spot in the rankings, but since then has slipped down the list. It was down in 10th in 2021 before falling to 14th in 2021. This year, the country dropped further still and now sits in 17th place. The worst countries for LGBTQ+ people in Europe are #Azerbaijan (two per cent), #Turkey (four per cent), and #Armenia (eight per cent). Those three countries have retained the bottom three places for the past three years. Previous reasons for the UK’s slide have been the government’s immigration reforms, including its plan to deport some asylum seekers to #Rwanda, which ILGA-Europe claimed “would expose LGBTQ+ asylum seekers to unprecedented risk of violence”. #UN independent expert #VictorMadrigalBorloz shared his assessment of the UK’s #LGBTQ+ rights on Thursday (11 May) following a 10-day visit. He said that abusive rhetoric from politicians, the media, and social commentators has resulted in increased hate speech against marginalised groups in the UK. “I am deeply concerned about the increased bias-motivated incidents of harassment, threats, and violence against #LGBT people including a rampant surge in hate crimes in the UK,” he said. “All of this is attributed – by a wide range of stakeholders – to the toxic nature of the public debate surrounding sexual orientation and #genderidentity.” He also noted concerns around waiting times for gender-affirming care in #theNHS and at the lack of movement in the government’s promise to ban so-called conversion therapy. He called its continued U-turns on the issue “perplexing”. “The vicissitudes of this and other necessary public policies appear to be connected to political discourse concerning gender-diverse persons and #refugees and #asylumseekers, two areas in which recent state actions are cause for concern,” he added On asylum, he said that the government’s “current and envisaged asylum policies… could effectually amount to an asylum ban, contrary to international refugee law standards”. He added that #LGBTQ+ people “could be specifically affected by any such ban”. While Madrigal-Borloz lauded the UK or implementing “radical change” and a “robust framework of domestic and international legal protections” in recent decades, his view on the future was cooler. He was “particularly alarmed” by the recent letter from the #EqualitiesandHumanRightsCommission (#EHRC) to equalities minister Kemi Badenoch regarding redefning sex as “biological sex” under the #EqualityAct. #YoweriMuseveni gave assent to the Anti-Homosexuality Act, which immediately becomes one of the strictest anti-LGBTQ+ laws in the world, the official government of #Uganda’s Twitter account reported on Monday (29 May).  Uganda parliament speaker Anita Among also confirmed the news in a post on Twitter, saying Museveni had “answered the cries of our people” and “legislated to protect the sanctity of family”.  “I now encourage the duty bearers under the law to execute the mandate bestowed upon them in the Anti-Homosexuality Act,” Among wrote. “The people of Uganda have spoken, and it is your duty to now enforce the law in a fair, steadfast and firm manner.” The new legislation doubles down on already harsh sanctions imposed on LGBTQ+ people in Uganda, where consensual same-sex sexual intimacy is illegal.  The Anti-Homosexuality Act introduces the new crime of “aggravated homosexuality”, which is defined as sex with a person under the age of 18 and having sex while HIV positive, among other categories. It carries a death sentence.  Parliament approved an earlier version of the bill in March that had provisions which sought to punish people for merely identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community, but this clause was later removed by lawmakers in May after Museveni returned the bill to parliament for reconsideration.  #ArthurKayima, a queer #Ugandan #humanrights activist, condemned the “vile, deadly legislation”, saying it will do “nothing to improve Uganda or the lives of Ugandans”.  “Rather than focusing on the real issues Uganda is facing – poverty, poor infrastructure, the economy, domestic violence – Museveni would rather cause distraction by attacking our fundamental right to exist,” Kayima said.  The activist continued: “I am afraid for my community. Aside from performing in Dubai earlier this year, a move that can only be described as a transgression from her usual modus operandi, Beyoncé’s first performance of the tour has reaffirmed her affinity with queer people of every creed, with its set list and staging, but the world’s most-famous mononym did not limit the promotion of self-love and acceptance to the stage. On Saturday (10 June), residents gathered on Batt Close, part of the Rochberie Heights development in #Rugby, to march just 80 metres along their street. The #parade was joined by local #dragqueen, @RubellaVaxineDrag – known as Miss Ruby V – who led the neighbours in their march. A #gay Missouri Republican, Rep #ChrisSander (R-Lone Jack) is questioning his future in the party after it passed two anti-trans bills in once day. The bills, one proposing a ban on #genderaffirmingcare for young people, the other anti-trans sports legislation, were approved on Wednesday (10 May), and will now head to Republican governor #MikeParson, who is expected to sign them into law, #CNN reported. Under-18s are not routinely offered #genderaffirmingsurgery anywhere in the US. The bills have even attracted criticism from lawmakers, with openly gay representative Chris Sander claiming he was now questioning whether he is still a #Republican after his #GOP colleagues approved the bills. Missouri’s anti-trans bills explained The anti-trans healthcare bill, SB49, would prevent physicians from performing gender-affirming surgeries or prescribing #hormonetherapy to minors. It follows a “terrifying” attempt by Republican #attorneygeneral #AndrewBailey to restrict almost all gender-affirming care for both minors and adults. Bailey issued an emergency order on 13 April to put severe limitations on receiving gender-affirming care for all ages, including requirements of three years of medically documented #genderdysphoria and mandated therapy. It would also limit gender-affirming care for autistic people, or people with depression or anxiety. The rule, which was to come into effect on 27 April, has been temporarily blocked by a judge, but trans people in the state have warned that if it prevails, it could lead to a “mass detransitioning”. Conducted by a female #physiotherapist on behalf of a doctor, the tests – which followed protests from #Nigeria, #SouthAfrica and #Ghana relating to allegations that the #EquatorialGuinea squad included men –  were sick and humiliating, Fischer said.  Since 2011, when #FIFA announced its current #genderrecognition policies, teams have been required to sign a declaration guaranteeing that players at #WorldCups are “of an appropriate gender.”  Fischer, who played 194 times for her country, wrote: “We were told that we should not shave ‘down there’ in the coming days and that we will show our g3nitalia for the doctor.  “No one understands the thing about shaving but we do as we are told and think: ‘How did it get to this?’ Why are we forced to do this now? On Friday (9 June), the #NationalHealthService released a report stating that it would only allow under-18s to receive #pubertyblockers in exceptional circumstances or under a study looking into their effects. “Outside of a research setting, puberty suppressing hormones should not be routinely commissioned for children and adolescents,” a statement read. Puberty blockers are sometimes administered to #trans under-18s as a way to pause puberty development to help combat #genderdysphoria. Under the new rules, which the #NHS described as an “interim policy”, the medication would only be accessible after further research outlines the impact they have on #transgender adolescents. The NHS website describes the effects of puberty blockers as “physically reversible”, but notes that “it is not known what the psychological effects may be.” The website also claims that many cases of “gender variant behaviour” disappear after children hit puberty, despite a UK survey published in April finding that just 0.47 per cent of gender identity clinic patients feeling regret after #transitioning. The NHS announced in 2022 that it would close the #Tavistock Centre’s #Gender and Identity Development Service (#GIDS) in favour of four regional centres to help minimise growing waiting times, following recommendations made in an interim report by #DrHilaryCass. Plans to close the UK’s only service for #transyouth were delayed to March 2024 after the NHS said the “complexity” of the project required “revisions to the timetable”. On Tuesday (30 May), the #InnocentDrinks posted a thread about #genderdiversity in which they asked charity, #Mermaids “What’s OK to say?”  It detailed things such as misgendering and deadnaming, and also gave an insight into respectful language to use when talking about #trans people. But after criticism for its pro-trans stance, #Innocent deleted the thread, explaining it had received “lots of comments that weren’t in line with our values”.  Innocent Drinks later posted an explanation stating that it was deleted “to make sure our social media channels are respectful and inclusive”. Captioned “a note from us”, the message noted that the company has “affinity groups” which act as safe spaces for people who work at the brand, allowing them to share experiences around protected characteristics.  The tweet goes on to highlight the company’s previous talks which have covered #autism, #neurodiversity and #racialequality. Many comments under the post have accused the brand of caving in to the bullying tactics of anti-trans #rightwingers. Several users questioned why they didn’t “just turn the replies off”.  Anti-trans tweeters seized the opportunity to engage in a popular pastime among right-wingers, declaring a #boycott of the brand and stating they will “never buy Innocent drinks again.” A growing number of brands have faced recent boycott calls over support for the #LGBTQ+ community, including #Lego, #Nike, #TheNorthFace, #BudLight, #Target, #adidas, #Starbucks and #Kohls. Mermaids, which provides support to young trans people and their families, came under attack from #TheTelegraph last year with the media outlet publishing of a series of articles painting the charity as dangerous to children.  The attacks included accused the charity of putting children at risk by providing them with chest binders “behind parents’ backs”.
