🍁 Silver Maple bowl turned on a foot powered lathe 🍁 The wood came from an old tree in my neighborhood that sadly needed to be taken down before it fell on one of the several homes in its shade. With the help of the arborist I was able to save a small trailer load of this tree from becoming wood chips and firewood. It was a privelage to watch the arborist, and their team, carefully climb and remove the tree in pieces with ropes and pulleys. Habits and routines are SO important. Our habits today, good or bad, define who we will become. When something in life changes, it makes it easy for some of our good habits to fall by the wayside. Keeping solid routines and forming good habits has always been something insanely difficult for me to do. Usually, if one thing changed, everything would fall apart. But the last few years I’ve gotten way better at recognizing that pattern and finding the right reset points. Milking my cow every day was the best thing I’ve ever done as far as establishing a positive routine into which I could stack a whole host of healthy habits. But when I dried her off for the season, I found myself floundering. I hadn’t realized how many good things my daily milking routine had set into motion. So I figured out a good replacement habit: carving a spoon a day. It does the same things for me that may daily milking did: gave my days a sense of grounding. Got me a little exercise. Gave me some much needed introvert time. Gave me time to think and meditate. And just like that little dopamine hit I got from putting the milk in the fridge or adding another pound of butter or cheese to my freezer, seeing my little pile of spoons growing by the day makes me smile. Incidentally, spoon carving also happens to keep my popeye forearms in peak milking condition, and I’m learning a thing or two about spoon carving in the process. #spooncarving #greenwoodworking #woodworking #woodworkersoftiktok

Learning to nest bowls In January I spent a week studying pole lathe turning with Jarrod Dahl at the Woodspirit School of Traditional Craft in Ashland, WI. During this session Jarrod taught me how to nest bowls. Nesting is an advanced woodturning technique where multiple bowls are crafted from one piece of wood. Jarrod also walked me through how to forge the tools necessary for nesting bowls on a pole lathe. Little creative collaboration with nature. This past weekend I spent a few days out camping with my friend Tom. We came across some birch felled by a beaver and we each carved a spoon from the wood that retains some of the original tool (teeth) marks. Forging pole lathe nesting hooks I recently spent 5 days studying pole lathe turning with Jarrod Dahl at the Woodspirit School where we focused on building my nesting skills on a pole lathe. This advanced technique is used to yield more than one bowl out of a single piece of wood. The tools needed to turn the channels between bowls are specific to intended shape and size of the channel/bowl. A huge factor in the success of practicing this technique is having an array of these hook tools on hand. Additionally, it can greatly benefit the turner if they are able to forge these tools as needed, to accommodate new shapes as well as replace worn/overused or broken tools. Jarrod taught me how to make nesting hooks, and on the nested set in this video I used exclusively the hooks I forged under Jarrod’s guidance earlier in the week. This is something I’m greatly proud of and incredibly grateful to Jarrod for getting me to this stage. The next step in my toolmaking journey is to dedicate some space to always have a forge set up and ready to light. Currently it takes me about a half-hour to setup the small forging setup I currently use. This learning was made possible by an Artist Fellowship awarded to me by the American Scandinavian Foundation. When this box flew off the lathe just before it was complete I decided to improvise. I miscalculated how much I should turn the section holding the lid of this box to the mandrel. Because the lid was a little dented by flying off between the centers I decided to try something probably not advisable. Using the scar left from the break to re-center the box I risked splitting the lid. Wrapping the rope around the box was also not good practice. The gearing wasn’t working and it took a bit of care to get enough rotation to make a cut all the way around. Also, the rope jumped off the box twice and it transferred some soot from the center to the wall of the box, hence my “bummer.” In the end my troubles payed off, this time. I managed to turn one more pass on the lid turning away the damage. This is the second lidded box of this style I’ve turned. The first one I turned under the instruction of Jarod Dahl during the first of two 5-day skill development sessions for my ASF Artist Fellowship project. Friction lid boxes like this were turned in a variety of shapes/styles for several hundred years in Sweden, as much as 40-50k a year were made in peak production in the late 1700’s.
