Somatic healing and nervous system regulation have taken the mainstream social media world by storm. And for good reason. Because updated research provides that healing trauma must begin in the body, ie bottom-up. However, with any new and exciting practice, comes mistakes. We’ll get to that in a minute. First, I want to say that as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Polyvagal Trained Practitioner who’s been expertly trained in nervous system focused modalities since 2015, who’s worked globally in the trauma space since 2012, and who as a trauma expert regularly educates and informs our nations military & Department of Justice… it’s been a breath of fresh air to FINALLY witness the virality and acceptance of these effective treatments that not only saved me in my own healing, but have also guided thousands of my clients and audiences over the years. I was no longer speaking into a void. People were finally getting on board. Over the past few years, I’ve sat back and watched in amazement as this runaway train has taken off. Maybe a little too fast. Today, we see thousands of influencers, wellness experts and coaches flocking to the somatic space. Which is great! However, what can be good can quickly turn harmful when it comes from those who don’t yet have the deeper and nuanced experience of working within the intricacies of nervous system physiology, especially from a place of self-embodiment & self-regulation. What I too often witness on my newsfeed is well-intentioned content that encourages INTENSE and CATHARTIC releases for all, without acknowledging that each client has a unique nervous system that carries with it different capacity/ability to be with intense charge. They encourage: SCREAM, CRY, SHAKE, RAGE, HIT…without first educating them on the importance of two foundational elements of somatic work: titration (taking it slow) and resourcing (building in safety practices first)—which when implemented correctly, can actually create a NATURAL and impactful cathartic release. This kind of work should always be guided by a doctrine of safety that is unique to each individual client. By meeting each system where it's at, we move at THAT systems speed, not our own. We speed up and slow down with their system. Without these safeguards, the result is countless people who are exposing their already dysregulated systems to further overwhelm and yes…re-traumatization. The paradigm of the healing world is transforming right before our eyes. It’s inspiring & encouraging. Yet, it also requires that we show up in this space with SAFETY always being paramount.
