Sir Lindsay Hoyle is facing calls to stand down as speaker over his decision to allow a Labour amendment to the SNP's Gaza ceasefire motion on Wednesday. More than 50 MPs have now called for his resignation after he broke with convention and selected Labour's amendment calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” to be debated and voted on before the SNP's original motion – saving Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer from a rebellion within his own party. The decision sparked uproar with SNP MPs and some Conservatives walked out of the debate in protest at the speaker’s handling of the matter in extraordinary scenes. “This is a highly sensitive subject on which feelings are running high in the house, in the nation and throughout the world. I think it’s important on this occasion that the house is able to consider the widest possible range of options," Hoyle said. The move saw a furious backlash from the Conservatives and the SNP, with at least 56 MPs so far having signed a motion of no confidence in the speaker. He has apologised for what happened, also pledging to hold talks with senior party figures to explain his decisions. But it is yet to be seen whether this will placate those pushing for his resignation. #ukpolitics #speakerofthehouse #lindsayhoyle #speakerhoyle #snp #tory #labour #uknews #politicsnews
