The Zapotec people of Oaxaca, Mexico have a rich tradition of using natural dyes to color their textiles. They have a deep understanding of the properties and uses of various plants, insects, and minerals, which they use to create a stunning range of colors. Like this one, they grind a mineral that is then mixed with lime juice and Mezcal to give a deep green, when ash is added it becomes a creamy pistachio color. It really is like magic, it's amazing to see in person. The Zapotec dyes are known for their vividness, depth, and durability. The process of natural dyeing is labor- intensive and requires patience, skill, and a deep connection to the natural world. The Zapotec continue to practice this ancient art form.
