real life > screen life I LOVED my 90’s childhood memories growing up riding scooters around with friends, camping out in my backyard, playing card games + dominoes on Friday nights with my family… no devices to distract us from missing out on the fun or from being present. we forget there is so much life has to offer when you don’t resort to screens and are distracted by the iPads, phones and tv shows, and even social media. we are not 100% screenless over here, we actually do it almost daily in small quantities which I believe is okay (studies suggest it’s not recommended before the age of 2 so Kru has actually never watched a show or YouTube series) but I always look to limit it for Reign, especially when there is so much life to experience and from experience, her bahavior does tend to have a more negative shift after screentime and there is plenty of data to back the blue light, bright colors, chaotic sounds and motions that transmits through the screens re-wires brain activity and development. and for those that think it’s harder, it definitely can be, especially if resorting to screentime is your normal (no judging over here, I have done this myself too) that’s when I thought - what did our parents do for years when devices weren’t around? We had coloring books, puzzles or different toys specifically for restaurants, in grocery stores, on airplanes..When you got bored, you figured it out… go outside and the possibilities are endless. is it less convenient at times? Sure… is it impossible? No. There are SO many activities to replace screentime out there and we must not forget, there was a time prior to iPads, YouTube, and tv, and the kids figured it out and in the long run we were happier more present kids and it’s my hope to set up that same environment for my own. if you’re reading this, this is your challenge to put some limits on screentime, or even join us on a screen detox starting today through Memorial Day- it’s going to be tough, there will be resistance, but I promise it’s WORTH IT. see the positive changes in your kids behavior and watch them use their imagination and creativity in so many ways!
