Kinda Interesting Things #96: The Buildings That Stored Uranium For The Manhattan Project If you’re walking on the High Line at West 20th Street in Chelsea, you’ll come across these ordinary buildings. At one time, they were known as the Baker & Williams Warehouses — top secret government facilities that stored uranium for the Manhattan Project. In 1989, the buildings were found to have up to 38 times the federally allowed radiation levels, prompting a cleanup that would last until 1995.
