Drug overdose deaths dropped nationwide. Experts are working to understand why New data from the CDC shows a drop in drug overdose deaths, down nearly 17 percent compared year-over-year. The annual death toll dropped from approximately 113,000 to just over 94,000. It’s a rare bit of good news after decades of rising fatalities. Overdose deaths have nearly quadrupled since 2002 and spiked to record highs during the pandemic. 09:18On Thursday, Venice became the first city in the world to charge day-trippers a tourist fee. Under the pilot program, tourists who are not staying overnight will be charged roughly $5.37 in order to enter the historic city. Other individuals, like workers, individuals born in Venice or people visiting relatives who live in Venice, are exempt from the fee. The goal is to mitigate large tourist crowds that pack the historic city during the peak season. Any day-trippers enter Venice from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time between April 25 will need to pay the fee. Those who do not register and show a QR code or ticket could be fined between $53 and $322 dollars in fines. Many local residents are protesting the program. #venice #veniceitaly #daytripper #daytripperfee #venicefee #venezia #venecia #italy #venicetouristfee #tourist #touristfee #deemazein #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #news #italynews

06:05Jurors heard opening statements Monday in Donald Trump's New York trial over alleged hush money payments to help his 2016 election campaign and hide potentially damaging information. The trial marks the start of the first criminal case against a former U.S. president. In opening statements, the prosecution alleged Trump engaged in "a criminal scheme to corrupt" the 2016 election. The defense countered by saying Trump didn't break any laws and that the payments were legal. Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker was the first witness called to the stand in the trial, in which Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. A guilty verdict wouldn't prevent Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, from becoming president again, but he couldn't pardon himself if he were found guilty, since it's a state case.
