A baby’s skills for reaching and grasping rapidly develops in the first year of their life. As an OT, I analyze these functional skills often. To get a front row seat in watching this development unfold month by month has me mind blown 🤯 Month 1: limited voluntary movement, grasp is mainly reflexive Month 2: beginning to swat without aim or control, grasp is still mainly reflexive Month 3: beginning to swat at hanging objects with purpose, voluntary grasp is starting to emerge Month 4: reaching out for objects intentionally, grasp involves the ulnar side of the hand (no thumb involvement) called the ulnar palmar grasp Month 5: voluntary, purposeful reaching and grasping, grasp involves whole hand (palmar grasp) Follow @otmarissa for all things child development! #pediatricot #occupationaltherapy #firsttimemom #earlyintervention #childdevelopment #baby #momsoftiktok #momtok #5monthsold
