MONSTER tornado showing off the very important storm spotter concept that the tornado is bigger than the condensation funnel you see. In this case, there was consistent ground contact underneath a huge portion of the meso (under the laminar bowl especially). I was halfway convinced this thing was going to condense fully in seconds and become a monster visually. As a general rule of thumb, anytime I see something like this happening I try to stay under the horseshoe cut in the updraft because I have seen tornadoes that look like this grow very rapidly in size and strength in mere seconds. #weather #science #tornado #oklahoma #twister

Sometimes you chase a day where everything goes exactly how you didn’t expect, but it’s also way more interesting that way. This day in SW Oklahoma featured a localized outbreak of supercells with tornadoes which was absolutely not expected. I left the house thinking that if we saw a supercell for a couple of hours before it dissipated I was going to be pretty happy with the documentation we achieved. Instead, we chased 3 different cells that all produced tornadoes, including one that had one of the most intense radar signatures you could imagine. Wild stuff. Massive multivortex tornado lofting trees hundreds of feet into the air in Oklahoma! This was the starting phase of a terrifying EF-4 tornado that tracked just west of Shawnee, OK and directly impacted the small community of Bethel Acres. This initial multivortex phase already had the look for a violent tornado taking shape. We ended up moving east and documenting this tornado as it shape-shifted from this multi-vortex into a wedge into a giant stovepipe back into a wedge again. This was part of the forgotten tornado outbreak of 2013, the day before the Moore EF5. #tornado #oklahoma #weather #science #nature
