Tried to write FAQ’s for this post but only came up with one loaded question: WHAT IS THIS? It’s complicated and there’s no easy answer. We’ve done all the testing we can and just ended up with more questions. In my opinion, this is breeding w/o health testing. Yes, he has many wonderful characteristics of a stud dog, but it’s scary to think Kernel would have been bred had I not gotten him (that whole story is on my page if you go a few months back). One easy and partial answer is that he has a hyperactive immune system. He has always had a bunch of random ailments (like illnesses and neuro issues), SOME that I eventually realized were stemming from a food allergy. The allergy, in conjunction with poor ear bone structure, ended up causing End Stage Ear Disease. This attacks the ears, skin, and gut, and he was in so much pain. His first derm said his skin was too damaged to ever heal and his ears were the worst she’s seen. I naively thought after his ears were removed, the infection would clear. At that point, the second derm already got him on the right food (plus both were rx diets for severe GI issues). Instead, his skin flared from everything down to the shave and medical tape used for each surgery. Shortly after, his spleen and a tumor on it ruptured, resulting in more surgery. Idk if this was related to the ear infection, however a spleen tumor most often signifies blood cancer and Kernel’s was benign, so I do wonder if the issues were connected. The infection has sat deep within his fascia ever since. In the last 3yrs, I’ve spent literally over 4000hrs massaging / trying to heal his skin. Every day we do red light therapy, 3x/wk I take him to cryotherapy, 1x/wk he gets a salt soak/medical bath, and a few x/wk we alternate between hot compresses, icing, topicals, etc. It’s antibiotic resistant and he’s been on prednisone before, and again currently for the past month. He gets cbd, fish oil, and probiotics daily. Kernel is the only member of his immediate family to live past 5 and he turns 8 in July, so I’m beyond grateful despite all of this.
