Ok maybe it’s not an unpopular opinion but it is MY opinion 😅 I am always slow to repot/mess with the roots - for a reason! So many of you have come to me with struggling plants and one of the first questions I ask is if you repotted recently, next question is about light. Repotting is stressful for plants, especially if your light isn’t ideal. There’s no reason you need to take healthy plants out of the soil they’re in and/or put them in a new pot immediately. Also be very aware of the pot size you’re wanting to use. 1” larger than the root ball is my rule. You can always size up again if the plants roots have a growth spurt, but better to stay on the smaller side than go too large and risk root rot. When there is too much soil to roots, the roots can’t absorb enough of the water — this is exacerbated by low light levels, cool temps, lack of airflow. And it all equals a high chance of root rot. Do you have a favorite propagation medium? ⬇️ Mine is for sure perlite! it’s puffed (think popcorn🍿)volcanic glass & it’s perfect for propagating because: -it’s sterile (doesn’t harbor bacteria) -can be reused over and over (doesn’t break down) -and it’s relatively inexpensive and easy to find I have great success propagating in it but as always warmth and light are key! Placing your cuttings in a warm sunny environment will help them root faster. Don’t worry if you see some algae growth, it’s perfectly normal and expected in damp sunny environments! I usually end up leaving my props in perlite indefinitely, as it’s a great substrate—just be sure to fertilize as soon as roots are present and regularly afterwards as it has zero nutrients on its own.
