Years ago we had the ability to bring stray animals into our shelters. After COVID every shelter in Houston transitioned to “intake by appointment only”. Meaning if you find a dog you need an appointment to turn it into the county/city shelter. Those appointments are impossible to secure and over a 2 week wait time. Our shelter is overloaded and everyone is quickly realizing we cannot save them all. In the past I would have been more worried about backlash from “leaving dogs behind” but I honestly don’t care. This is a war zone and my mission is reducing loss of life. This tiny 10 lb dog was at risk of being destroyed by these male dogs attempting to mate with her. I couldn’t wait to find fosters for three unaltered male dogs that don’t exist. And to expect me to safely bring them home is putting my dogs at risk. So I did what many would disagree with. And I’m ok with that. Because at the end of the day I know that I am doing my best. Managing my mental health while working full time and caring for 20+ dogs can be a challenge. But I have learned what I can handle and I stick to that regardless of what outsiders may guilt me for.
