Ever since the early 18th century, there have been exactly zero gray whales in the Atlantic Ocean due to commercial whaling. The remaining gray whales have been in the Pacific, with the majority living along North America’s coastline. However, since 2010, there have been a handful of gray whale sightings in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, with the most recent sighting being off Miami, Florida last December. And some researchers are beginnjng to speculate that this could be the beginnings of a mass oceanic expansion of gray whales from the Pacific into the Atlantic.
