Never looking at a sponge in the same way again ☹️ The medieval pharmacy or apothecary sold many fascinating products - some we may recognise today as medicinal, others less-so! This remarkably well-preserved wall painting shows 17 types of aromatic waters in labelled jars, medicated sponges for anesthetic purposes, wax effigies of body parts, as well as candles and sweets in beautiful paper-lined boxes. The apothecary himself can be seen in the corner doing sums (perhaps book keeping!). The role of the man in tattered clothes working with the mortar and pestle is not clear, but we can assume he is involved in the production of medicines. It appears that the customer is purchasing dates from the front counter, and she holds up a silver coin to pay. Fascinating details about everyday medieval life! #medievalhistory #pharmacy
