You can tell a lot about the health of your cat from the health of their coat! This is one old wives’ tale that is actually true! Our cats love to indulge in self care and always want to look their best, so if they start to look a little scruffy, it can be a sign they are not feeling so great and that they need some support from us. For example, if they start to develop clumps in their coat, especially along their backs or around their thighs, it can be a sign that they are becoming arthritic, which is a very common but very underdiagnosed problem, especially as they get older. They are simply too painful to really pull those yoga poses like they did in their young days and can’t reach those further away places. An untidy coat can also indicate they have sore teeth. An uncomfortable mouth won’t stop them from eating but it may stop them grooming as much as they should. Essentially if your cat starts to look more messy than marvellous, it can be a sign they aren’t feeling too well and is a good reason to get them checked out by your vet. And once they are back on track, you can help them to stay beautiful by adding a skin and coat supplement to their diet, something like the Purina ProPlan Skin and Coat Cat Supplement Oil! It contains high levels of great quality Omega 3 oils, also known as essential fatty acids, which help to keep the skin moist and promote a shiny coat, and Vitamin E which helps to support the body’s natural anti-inflammatory processes. It also tastes great! (to cats!) so most really enjoy it with their meals or even straight off the spoon!
