Here are my 5 top tips for helping your dog if they start to suffer from heat stroke! 1) Make them stop and rest. Dogs who are starting to over-heat won’t naturally rest, so we need to make sure that they do, so they can start to cool down again. 2) Get them out of the direct sun and into a cooler spot. Again, this will help to slow down a rising body temperature and hopefully get it to start going down. 3) Get them wet. By far the most effective and rapid way to cool down an overheating dog is to use water and wind. Young and fit dogs can be fully emmersed in water, the cooler the better, but geriatric dogs or ones with heath problems are more safely cooled by soaking the coat and using convection. 4) Cold water and even ice are safe! The more rapidly the temperature is dropped the better. The damage is done by a high temperature AND the time it remains in the danger zone. The colder the water, the more quickly they will cool. 5) Call your vet! But do not get in the car and leave until you have started the cooling process. We know that dogs cooled by their owners before they are brought to the clinic have a higher rate of survival because their temperatures are already coming down. An over-heating dog will continue to overheat on a car ride, even with aircon and windows down.
