Switching sides! I came across a post on twitter of someone saying i “claim to be a therapist” so i thought i’d clarify. Im a mental health nurse, that will never change, but a little bit about my therapist role. You need a postgraduate certifcate in cognitive behavioural therapy to be a CBT therapist, this takes one year, and involves you working as a trainee therapist delivering therapy to patients whilst this gets observed by a qualfied therapist. I’m currently completing my postgraduate diploma in cognitive behavioural therapy, the expectation is the same, but it takes two years to complete, and i should be finished by December. By doing the two years this means i’ll be specialised in other areas of CBT which the PGCert doesn’t include such as working with individuals experiencing psychosis. As i’m still on my course I’m technically still classed as a trainee therapist due to specialising in CBT for complex presentations. However, if i quit my course tomorrow, i would have my PGCert (one year) qualification as a therapist for anxiety disorders (gad, ocd, ptsd, social anxiety etc) and for depression.
