Cat Fact of the Day: Would cats make great politicians? In 2012, Hank the Cat ran as a joke candidate for VA’s senate seat. Hank’s owners’ Matthew O’Leary and Anthony Roberts started the campaign as a joke after growing tired of seeing politician’s faces and signs along the road. Hank ran for the state Senate first, but he had a crushing lost with only 9 votes. O’Leary and Roberts set their sights higher and started Hank’s campaign for the US senate. There were more serious points to Hank’s campaign such as spay & neuter awareness, fundraising for animal charities, and criticizing the electoral college and status of politics. His own campaign videos were somewhat satricial, parodying classic political campaigns and their themes. But it was nowhere as statrical as thebighonkin’s political attack ad parody, which jokingly criticized Hank’s run for office. Thebighonkin is a comedic and creative group that produces different skits or artistic projects on YT. They made two politicial attack ads, with this ad getting the most views and attention. Hank ended up being a write-in candidate for the Virginia election because of his status as a feline, but he ended up getting thousands of votes, with Roberts reporting that Hank got over 7,000 votes. By the end of the campaign, Hank reportedly earned $16,000, which Hank’s owners planned to donate to animal groups. In 2014, Hank passed away of stomach cancer at the age of 13. On Hank’s Facebook page, his owners still post, mostly posting updates on animals in politics #cats #catsoftiktok #cat #cattok #catfacts #funfacts #learnontiktok #catperson #catlady #meow #cutecats #cutecat #funnycats #funnycat
