The Embung Sanur area in Denpasar has become one of the filthiest waterways in Bali due to the accumulation of waste coming from an ongoing renovation of a water tunnel. The renovation has been taking place for the past 8 months and is yet to be completed. Our team has been working tirelessly for the past 3 days to clean up the area and we have successfully collected over 4,000 kg of plastic. However, cleaning up the area is not enough. We need to stop this from happening again. Everyone has a responsibility in addressing the problem of waste management, starting at the household level. We will be installing one of our barriers in this waterway and work upstream with the local communities and government to prevent this from happening again.

Cleaning rivers is not as easy as just removing plastics. We deal with all sorts of weather patterns and environmental challenges, including invasive plants. Water hyacinth is a free floating plant known as one of the world’s fastest growing plants. It is very common in Indonesia’s rivers, and our teams are actively working around it to remove as much plastic from rivers as possible.

Plastic bags is the type of plastic that we find the most of in Indonesia’s rivers. From the 844,936 kg of trash collected in 2023, 36% of it was plastic bags. We are very excited to be up-cycling these bags through @sungaidesign into long lasting products. From a problem to possibility — A testament to show that we can protect our planet, one up-cycled plastic bag at a time.

From our 268 barriers installed, we catch an average of 15 kg of trash per barrier per day. Our barriers are a cheap and efficient way to stop plastic from going into the ocean.
