Ocean is 6 years old but she’s grown up watching me teach Ash how to Braille at home. She’s grown up watching me add Braille labels around our house and practice reading Braille with Ash all of her life. A couple days ago she asked if she could learn Braille too and she said it was for something special for Ashton. She said she wanted write him a birthday card. His birthday isn’t until the 22nd of this month but she wanted to practice. Learning Braille as a sighted person is not super simple, I’ve worked on it for years for my son even if I practice I still need to look at the Braille sheet to make sure I’m making the correct dot numbers for each letter. I was so proud and a little emotional watching her working so hard to learn how to Braille the words “Happy Birthday” for her brother who is blind. I know I shared about this moment before in a picture but I needed to share this moment in a video too. I think there’s nothing more beautiful than seeing my daughter trying to learn Braille in order to write a letter for her big brother. Just so he would be able to read it. Having a brother who is blind is teaching her that there are other ways to write letters for someone and sometimes you have to touch letters in order to read them. I love the lessons she is learning and also teaching others by taking the time to learn Braille for her brother. #blindkidscan #specialneedssiblings #blindtok #blindness VD: A boy and a little girl sitting by a desk with a Perkins Brailler and a Braille visual alphabet, the boy teaches and explains the Braille alphabet to his sister, she brailles a letter with his help, he reads it and it says “happy birthday”
