For the past few years, Michael has developed plantar flexion contractures, which restrict the ability to dorsiflex the foot (bringing it upward toward the shin), resulting from tightness in the calf muscles or Achilles tendon. In multiple sclerosis (MS), this condition often arises due to a combination of factors such as muscle spasticity, weakness, and neurological damage affecting muscle control. Immobility worsens plantar flexion contractures in MS. Extended periods of inactivity result in stiff, weak muscles, especially in the calves. Without regular movement and stretching, these muscles become inflexible, making foot movement challenging. AFO (ankle-foot orthosis) braces can help manage plantar flexion contractures in MS by providing support and stability to the ankle and foot. They maintain proper alignment and prevent further tightening of the calf muscles. Combining AFO braces with consistent stretching and mobility exercises is our strategy for Michael for effectively managing contractures and improving his mobility.
